The whirling Dorsey
The wheels are spinning so furiously on the Browns’ front
office, it has become a little arduous attempting to keep pace.
It’s a matter of time to determine whether John Dorsey’s
machinations in the last 36 hours, which appear knee-jerk as he continues to
massage the bottom third of his roster, pays off.
In addition to paring the not-so-final roster to 53 men by 4
Saturday afternoon, the Cleveland general manager restlessly traded for a pair
of guards and a wide receiver, and picked up another tight end, linebacker and
wide receiver off waivers in dizzying fashion on Sunday.
He also cut starting offensive left tackle Greg Robinson,
according to reports that also speculated he would be re-signed at a lower
salary in time to play the season opener. Further indication Dorsey is dissatisfied with his offensive line.
Robinson earlier this year signed a one-year contract worth
upwards of $9 million, a make-good deal that was to be a bridge to a more
lucrative contract should be play as well as he did in the second half of last
season.
In limited play during the exhibition season, the former No.
2 overall pick in the 2014 college draft displayed the kind of play that caused
him to become a National Football League vagabond.
Sitting still is not one of Dorsey’s strengths. The lower
third of the roster is swinging in the wind, subject to his whims. And odds are
he isn’t done yet. Not with seven days until the regular season opener at home
against Tennessee. Plenty of time for him and his men to further retool the
roster.
He plucked tight end Rickey Seals-Jones from Arizona,
linebacker Malik Jefferson from Cincinnati and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge
from the Los Angeles Rams off the waiver wire Sunday. How long they last is
anyone’s guess.
Victims of the latest moves were defensive tackle Trevon
Coley, safety Juston Burris (both waived) and rookie offensive lineman Drew
Forbes, whose knee injury is severe enough to land him on injured reserve.
The result left the Browns with 52 men on the roster, not
including running back Kareem Hunt, wide receiver Antonio Callaway and tight
end Rico Gathers on suspension list. Presumably, re-signing Robinson will bring
that number back up to 53.
Right now, the suddenly malleable roster consists of three
quarterbacks, three running backs, six wide receivers, one center, five guards,
two tackles and four tight ends on offense; four ends, four tackles, seven
linebackers, five cornerbacks and five safeties on defense; and long snapper,
placekicker and punter on special teams.
The latest series of moves appears to be an admission (concession?)
by Dorsey that his offensive line needs a lot of work. Realizing that on the
eve of the season opener is somewhat problematic.
Got all that?
